Pensions and Gratuities
Matters pertaining to Pensions and Gratuities are also monitored by the Administrative
Section in accordance with Chapter 38 of the Pensions Act 1957 and the Establishment
Circular No. 7, 1990 dated 28 February 1990.
Every Department is directed to submit all recommendations for retirement of officers and
personnel a year prior to the date of retirement and every application for pension and
gratuity should be submitted to the Treasury for examination and auditing by the
Auditor-General. The same procedure alsio applies to the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
Accordingly, all recommendations submitted to the Treasury will be fowarded to the
Pensions and Gratuity Advisory Committee for consideration and recommendation prior to
submission for approval from His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei
Darussalam.
The Advisory Committee is appointed by command of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang
Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam and chaired by the Minister of Finance and 5 other
members comprising of :
- Deputy Minsiter of Finance
- Permanent Secretary of Minsitry of Finance
- Director of Financial Services
- Director-General of Public Service
- Auditor-General
Computation of Pensions and Gratuity has 5 categories :
- Pensions and Gratuity for public servants reaching the retirement age of 55 years.
- Computation of Pensions and Gratuity and Settlement Allowance for officers and personnel
of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces. Officers and personnel of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces
are allowed to retire upon termination of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service.
- Computation of Gratuities for female officers upon marriage are entitled to receive
gratuities only. However, female graduates are excluded from this category. They are
placed on a permanent establishment upon appointment to a post in the Government of His
Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam.
- Computation of Pensions and Gratuities for officers and personnel who are deceased will
be divided into : 50% to spouse or spouses and 50% to the children. When the deceased's
widow remarries, entitlement to his pension will be granted and equaly divided between his
children below the age of 21 as supplementary benefit besides entitlement to pension
received.
- Computation of Pensions and Gratuities for officers and personnel upon early retirement.
Application for early retirement for males reaching the age of 50 and females reaching the
age of 45 are permissible.
