Background

The Minister

    • His Majesty Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien (His Majesty) became the first Minister of Finance when the Ministry of Finance was formed in 1984 as Negara Brunei Darussalam regained her Independence on the 1st January 1984.

    • His Majesty resumes as the Minister of Finance on the 23rd February 1997 when his brother His Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Digadong Sahibul Mal Pengiran Muda Haji Jefri Bolkiah voluntarily relinquished his duty as the Finance Minister held since 20th October 1986.


      Structure and Mission

    • As the Minister of Finance, His Majesty has two Deputy Ministers to assist him. They are Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Wangsa Dato Paduka Seri Laila Jasa Awang Haji Ahmad Wally Skinner and Dato Paduka Awang Haji Selamat bin Haji Munap.
    • The two Permanent Secretaries under the Ministry execute policy matters and deal with the day to day administration of the Ministry. They are Dato Paduka Awang Haji Yakub bin Abu Bakar and Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Perkerma Sura Awang Haji Abdul Ahdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman.
    • Six departments and agency reside under the Ministry of Finance and they are as follows:
      • The Treasury
      • The Brunei Investment Agency
      • The Royal Customs and Excise
      • The Economic Planning and Development
      • The Information Technology and State Store
      • The Employee's Trust Fund
    • Three sections make up the Ministry of Finance proper and they are as follows:-
      • Administration, Budget and Tender
      • Taxation and International Organisation
      • Finance Institution
    • The mission statement assures that the financial policies and regulations be carried out to achieve a stable financial environment, to ensure the international and public confidence in the nation's financial system and at the same time to encourage the development of the financial sector.
