Brunei joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1995 as its 180th member. Brunei supports IMF's role is to ensure the stability of the world's monetary system. Brunei contributes SDR145 million (US$210 million) to the IMF.

Brunei joined the World Bank in 1995 as its 179th member. Brunei supports the World Bank's role in providing assistance to developing countries. Brunei contributes US$184 million to the World Bank. The World Bank Group includes the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Finance Corporation, International Development Association, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency. At this time Brunei has not joined these other organisations within the World Bank Group.

(ASEAN)

Brunei joined ASEAN in 1984. The Ministry is responsible for any finance issues and regularly attends sectoral meetings such as the ASEAN Ministers of Finance Meetings on finance and other related committees or sub-foras relating to issues looked after by the Ministry. The ASEAN Ministers of Finance Meeting will be held in Brunei Darussalam in the year 2000.

Brunei joined the Commonwealth in 1984. The Ministry is responsible for any finance issues and regularly attends sectoral meetings on finance such as the Commonwealth Ministers of Finance Meetings and other related committees or sub-foras relating to issues looked after by the Ministry.

(ESCAP)

Brunei joined ESCAP in 1985. ESCAP is a United Nations' organisation set up to encourage the economic and social growth in Asia and the Pacific. Brunei contributes to two of ESCAP's institutions - the Asia Pacific Statistical Institute based in Tokyo and the Asia Pacific Development Centre based in Kuala Lumpur.

The Ministry is responsible for any finance issues and regularly attends sectoral meetings on finance such as the APEC Ministers of Finance Meetings and other related committees or sub-foras relating to issues looked after by the Ministry including the Procurement Experts Group and the Committee on Trade and Investments and the Economic Committee. The Ministry is also a member of the APEC Budget and Management Committee. The APEC Ministers of Finance meeting will be held in Brunei Darussalam in the year 2000.

OIC – Organisation of Islamic Countries

The Organisation of Islamic Countries' role is to encourage the cooperation and assistance in economic, science, culture and the spirit according to Islamic principles. Brunei joined OIC in 1984 and contributes its share of the administrative costs per year estimated at around US$0.75 million per annum.

Brunei is a member of the Islamic Development Bank. The role of the bank is to provide development funding assistance to Islamic countries.

Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)

Brunei joined the first Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 1), held in Bangkok in March 1996 which established a new forum for countries in the two regions to step up cooperation in the economic, political and cultural fields. The forum is intended to balance the existing links across the Atlantic and Pacific. The Ministry is responsible for any finance issues and regularly attends sectoral meetings on finance such as the ASEM Ministers of Finance Meetings and other related committees or sub-foras relating to issues looked after by the Ministry.

Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA)

Brunei has been a member of this association since 1984. Brunei contributes £12,000 per annum. This association provides training in tax administration and conducts many training programs conducted by member countries every year. The association meets once a year in a Commonwealth country.

Study Group on Asian Tax Administration and Research (SGATAR)

This organisation is a loose and informal gathering of Asian Tax Administrators and meets annually to discuss issues related to tax collections. Brunei Darussalam is not a member but is an active participant in many of the group's activities. Brunei Darussalam has attended the group’s meetings held in Beijing, Manila and Singapore as observers.
