COMMEMORATIVE ISSUES
Brunei Currency Board maintains a tradition
of issuing limited commemorative items especially in conjunction with any special event.
In addition to those coins in general circulation, coins with face
values of $1, $2, $3, $5, $10, $20, $25, $30, $50, $100, $200, $250, $500, $750 and $1,000
have been issued to collectors. The latest edition of commemorative coins being the ones
issued on 7th August 1999 in conjunction of the South-East Asian Games (SEA
Games) where Brunei is the host country. This limited edition featured three types of
coins with coloured portrait of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin
Waddaulah Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and SEA Games logo on all gold,
silver and cupronickel coins.
Other than coins, in 1996, Brunei Currency Board also issued polymer
note sets in denominations of $1, $5 and $10 in both leather and deluxe folders. These are
special collector items where the serial numbers of each set are matched and consist of 5
digits instead of the usual 6 digits of the polymer notes in circulation.
Besides issuing commemorative notes and coins, in 1998, special
medallions were produced to commemorate the proclamation of The Crown Prince of Brunei
Darussalam. These medallions came in three types i.e. in solid gold, silver and copper.
Note: Currently, these commemorative currency are
available locally at Brunei Currency Board only. Please watch this space for further
update on sale information. The public may purchase these items during the following hours
: 8.30 –11.45 am and 1.30 – 3.30 pm from Brunei Currency Board office. All
prices are in Brunei Dollars.
