NOTES

Notes issued by Brunei Currency Board, if not mutilated or imperfect shall be legal tender up to their face value.

Till today, Brunei Currency Board had issued various series of notes of denomination $1, $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, $500, $1,000 and $10,000.

For denominations of $1, $5, $10, $50 and $100, there had been 4 different designs. As for the $500 and $1,000 notes, there were 2 designs and the $10,000 denomination had only one design which was issued in 1989. The $25 note was a special issue in 1992 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of   Brunei Darussalam accession to the throne. All the background designs and ornamentation for the $25 note were inspired by Malay and Muslim decorative art motives. All the notes issued are legal tender in Brunei Darussalam.

During 1996, a few series of new notes were introduced. In February, new polymer currency notes of $1 denomination were issued and in July 1996, further denominations of $5 and $10 polymer notes all of the same size were issued. Polymer substrate was introduced for the very first time in Brunei Darussalam and used only for the smaller denominations of $1, $5 and $10 due to their high usage since a study has shown that polymer material is more durable.

Within the same year in May and August, new $100 notes and $50 notes were introduced respectively as legal tender. The new $50 and $100 are of same size unlike previous series. All of these notes will circulate side by side with any earlier series of notes. In an effort to keep up with new technology, Brunei Currency Board will produce new designs of notes from time to time.
